Bad Betting Advice, 2025 Week 13: Heart

As the 2025-26 Michigan State football season enters twilight, it would be easy to make the argument that there is nothing left for the Spartans to play for. The dreams of a late-season resurgence, a run to a bowl game, and maybe every a winning record were dashed last week as Michigan State fell to Penn State. Uncertainty, rumors, and speculation about the future of the coaching staff are running rampant both on-line and in real life. To make matters worse, by some measure this weekend's contest on the road against Iowa is the third toughest game on the Spartans' schedule, behind only the road games at Indiana and at USC.  Had Michigan State defeated Penn State last week, the showdown with the Hawkeyes would have had taken on new meaning. The Spartans would have had momentum and would have suddenly felt good about themselves for the first time in weeks. In contrast, Iowa is a team coming off two grueling, close losses to Oregon and at USC last week, 1,800 miles from home.  Fu...

Against All Odds, 2025 Week 12: Plans

Back in 2005, the indie rock group Death Cab For Cutie penned a lyric in their song "What Sarah Said," that has stuck with me over the years. The song opens with the line: "And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to father time." Going into the 2025 college football season, Michigan State fans were optimistic about the future. There was the belief that head Coach Jonathan Smith had a plan to rebuild the Spartan program. There was the hope that Year Two under the new staff would show significant improvement on the field. Many Spartan fans had plans to book a trip to a bowl game for the first time since the Peach Bowl in 2021. But after last weekend's loss to Penn State, the Spartans have been eliminated from bowl contention. Michigan State has clinched a fourth consecutive losing season in East Lansing for the first time since the early 1980s. This particular prayer to father time appears to have gone unanswered. The frustration from the fanbase o...

Bad Betting Advice, 2025 Week 12: Once More, With Feeling

The 2025-2036 Big Ten and college football season has reached the final stretch. After a much needed break last weekend, Michigan State football is back and ready to take to the gridiron once more. While many have left the Spartans for dead, they are still standing, and there is still a chance to resurrect this season. But the Spartans will have to walk through the fire to do it. Up this week is the Penn State Nittany Lions in the final game at Spartans Stadium. If you would have told me back in August that the Spartans and Lions would be coming into the game with identical conference records and that the game would have post season implications, it would have hit a bit differently. Instead of Penn State fighting for a possible Big Ten Title and playoff seeding, the Nittany Lions and Spartans are both simply trying to stave off elimination from bowl eligibility. The last several weeks have been an emotional roller coaster. Both teams remain in the free fall part of the ride, waiting to...

Against All Odds, 2025 Week 11: Battery, 100%

Every once in a while, it is nice to get a little break. Even in the best of times, it is good to take a weekend off from even our favorite hobbies. A change of scenery is a good chance to relax, reflect, and to recharges ones batteries. For fans of Michigan State athletics, this past weekend provided the perfect respite from what has been a surprisingly difficult fall.  The good vibes started on Friday night as the No. 1 ranked Spartan hockey team defeated No. 3 Penn State in overtime in front of a raucous crowd at Munn Ice Arena. On Saturday afternoon, the Spartan icers completed the sweep with a dominating 5-0 performance. The icing on the cake was the first big win of the young basketball season as the No. 22 ranked men's basketball team outlasted No. 15 Arkansas and legendary coach John Calipari at the Breslin Center. Michigan State's women's volleyball team picked up two wins over the weekend and the women's basketball team defeated Eastern Michigan on Sunday. The...

Arkansas Player Quotes

Under head coach Tom Izzo, the Michigan State Spartans Men's Basketball always plays a difficult non-conference schedule. But the bulk of the games against high-level opponents in the months of November and December are usually played on neutral courts.  The last time the Spartans faced a ranked non-conference opponent in the friendly confine of the Breslin Center was December of 2019, when Michigan State lost to then No. 11 Duke. This season, the Spartan players knew that hosting No. 14 Arkansas on Saturday night was going to be both a special opportunity as well as a special challenge. The Spartans' core of veteran starters and captains all understood both the importance of getting a key, resume-building win even in early November. It is never too early to think about NCAA Tournament positioning.  "Even though it's early, I feel like it's a game that we needed," said junior wing Coen Carr following the game. "We needed to win for our confidence as a tea...
