2024 Week Four Preview: One of These Nights

At the beginning of the season, I had this Saturday night's game between the Michigan State Spartans and the Boston College Eagles circled on my calendar. My expectation was that the Spartans would be 2-1 entering the game with a loss at Maryland on the resume, but with an opportunity to score a nice non-conference road victory in the city of Boston. So far in 2024 both the Spartans and the Eagles have been a pleasant surprise. Instead of 2-1, Michigan State is undefeated and hoping to stay that way. If the Spartans were to get the win and move to 4-0, it would most likely translate into a top 25 ranking. Michigan State would once again experience life in the fast lane on both the national and Big Ten scheme. But Boston College own an even stronger start due to a win at Florida State and a competitive loss at top 10 Missouri. As a result, this game looks tougher for the Spartans than expected when we were reviewing the schedule over the summer. I can't tell you why, exactly, bu

2024 Week Three Recap: Fun House

The Michigan State Spartan's 40-0 win this weekend over Prairie View A&M was pretty standard blow out win over an overmatched FCS opponent. But the game did provide on least one memory that will likely go down as one of the iconic plays of the 2024 season. In the final seconds of the first half, Spartan cornerback Charles Brantley intercepted a pass in the end zone and proceeded to bob and weave his way across the entire field, running well over 100 yards to score a touchdown for the Green and White. After watching this play I turned to my colleagues in the press box and said "that was fun." A few hours later while sitting in the Spartan Stadium Media Center, Coach Smith described the same play by saying, "That was exciting and fun." It took me several more hours before the gravity of these two statements hit me. After two dark and painful seasons, Michigan State football is fun again. Michigan State is 3-0 for the first time since 2021 and for only the fift

2024 Week Three Preview: The View

It is just Week Three of the 2024 college football season and already a lot has happened. It seems like a good time to have a seat on the couch, maybe with some friends (young and old), and talk about the hot topics of the college football season so far. Maybe I'll tell a few jokes along the way. We have already seen a few crazy upsets. "Are you telling mr that Florida State lost to Georgia Tech in Ireland and then lost at home to Boston College?" and "Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois as a 30-point favorite?" There are a few potentially surprising conference contenders. "Could USC actually win the Big Ten? Is Tennessee a legit SEC contender? Is it possible that UNLV will make the playoffs?" And there have been a few other teams that been disappointing. "Wow, Michigan sure looked bad against Texas. I wonder what's changed since last year?" Well, maybe that last one is only disappointing (or surprising) to some people . Then there is

2024, Week 2 Recap: Reverse Card

College football is a funny game sometimes, especially early on. In the preseason, we think we know which teams are have a strong hand and which ones do not. Then, we see just one week of action and then we really think that we know what going on. In Week Uno teams like Notre Dame, Penn State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Kentucky all looked pretty good. Meanwhile a few others teams such as Clemson, did not look as good. In Week Two, all those teams get slapped with the Reserve Card. But those schools were not alone. Last week, the red team from Maryland dominated UConn. At the same time the Green and White team from East Lansing struggled to beat Florida Atlantic. But in Week Two, the Spartans were also the beneficiaries of some reversal of fortune. We talked last week about how teams often make the biggest improvements between Week One and Week Two. For Michigan State, especially on offense, that was certainly the case. Starting from the opening kickoff, the Spartans seemed like a mo

2024, Week 2 Preview: Incline

We are just one short week into the college football season and although there is still a ton of uncertainty, a few things are becoming more clear. For example, a few things look better than expected just a few days ago. Some items that come to mind include Michigan State's defense, Penn State, USC, Notre Dame, Miami, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas.  On the other side of the coin, there are a few other items that perhaps underachieved in Week One. The Michigan State offense, Wisconsin, UCLA, Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech all fall into this category. Unfortunately for the Michigan State Spartans, several future opponents fell into the "better than expected" category. Six of the Spartans' Big Ten opponents won in Week One by a combined score of 259-21. The other three Big Ten opponents are currently ranked in the top 10.  Oh, and did you see that Michigan State's Week Four opponent, Boston College, went into Tallahassee and beat Florida Stat
